How to Make a Small Room Feel Larger

I have a small room in my house that I would like to seem larger than it is. Any ideas? -Emily

Hi Emily,

There are a number of things you can do to make a small room feel larger than it really is. Try some or all of the following:

  • Avoid busy wallpaper.
  • Stay away from vivid or dark colored paint.
  • Paint walls a light, pastel color.
  • Add more natural and artificial light.
  • Take down heavy drapes and leave the windows uncovered.
  • Install mirrors on the wall.
  • If tiling the floor, lay tile diagonally.
  • Reduce the amount of clutter and furniture in the room.

Good luck with your project,

Danny

  1. In my new house I have a room the is 9 feet wide by 25 feet long. It is right off the kitchen with a pass thru . This room goes out to a nice size patio with a invisible wall .(sliders ) I want to make this room into a ” game room ” . I have a TV that is 3D and all kinds of movie and games to play on it. My problem is the seating. Do I buy folding saucer chairs or try to find a fixed theater chair ? seeing the room is only 9″ wide I am having a hard time finding a set skinny enough also when we want to play Wii on the TV we would have to move them …..
