Why Your Vinyl Plank Flooring is Shrinking

Here’s a question from our 08/17/2019 Today’s Homeowner Radio Show.

Janice in Florida says, “We installed vinyl plank flooring and after a year it is now not adhering and seems to have shrunk in many areas.

The product isn’t on the market anymore. We don’t know how to fix this without taking it out and replacing it with a better product. This is in about 1,100 square feet of our home.”

We tell Janice it’s common practice to leave flooring in a room where it will be installed for up to a week to acclimate. Since some of her boards went directly in, they shifted in size. The bad news here is she’ll likely need to go ahead and replace the uneven section of her floor.

    • Hi, Richard,
Just leave the flooring out. The homeowner’s problem here was that they installed the floor immediately.

  1. Installed approx. 450 sq. ft. of snap together “Bamboo” flooring. Flooring set in the home 6 weeks before installment to acclimate. After installment approx. 6 months later or sooner the floor began to shrink. First started in a doorway to the hall. Separated 1/2″. Now today several years later it shrank all around the room , you can see the sub floor & pad showing before the quarter round trim. What’s happening? Purchased from lumber liquidators.

    • Hi, Eddie,
Bamboo floors naturally expand and contract as the weather changes.
However, as temperatures climb, the floors should return to normal. If that’s not happening, we recommend submitting questions involving unique situations like yours to the Today’s Homeowner Radio Show.
