  • Base cabinet: 24” deep x 34½” high
  • Base cabinet kick space: 3” deep x 4” high
  • Drawers: 4” high and up
  • Hanging cabinet: 12” deep x 30”- 42” high

Furniture

  • Chair seat: 16”-18” high by 15″-18″ deep, armrest 7″-9″ above seat
  • Coffee table: 18”- 28” wide x 16”-19” high
  • Desk: 24-30” wide x 28”- 30” high
  • Desk knee hole: 26”- 28” wide
  • Dining table: 36”- 42” wide x 29”- 32” high

Chandelier Size

There are several methods of determining the proper size for a chandelier:

  • Room Size: The length and width of the room added together in feet should equal the diameter of the chandelier in inches. Example: a 12′ by 12′ room should have a 24″ diameter chandelier (12 + 12 = 24″).
  • Table Size: In a dining room, the diameter of a chandelier should be at least half the width of the table. Example: a 42″ wide table should have a 21″ minimum diameter chandelier (42″ ÷ 2 = 21″). Another method is to make the diameter of the chandelier no larger than the width of the table minus 12″. Example: a 42″ wide table should have a maximum 30″ diameter chandelier (42″ – 12″ = 30″).

Chandelier Height

The height of the chandelier is based on the ceiling height and location:

  • In Entry Hall: The lowest point of a chandelier should be a minimum of 6½’ from the floor. If possible, or with higher ceilings, hang it 7′ from the floor.
  • Over Dining Table: The bottom of a chandelier should be at least 30″ above the dining table (59″-62″ from floor). For ceilings higher than 8′, add 3″ for each additional foot of ceiling height. Example: With a 10′ ceiling, the bottom of the chandelier should be approximately 36″ above the top of the table.

Mattress Sizes

  • Single (twin): 75” long x 39” wide
  • Single (twin) extra long: 80” long x 39” wide
  • Double (full): 75” long x 54” wide
  • Queen: 80” long x 60” wide
  • King: 80” long x 76” wide
  • California King: 84” long x 72” wide

  1. Can you please advise what height above a seat is standard for the armrest? I am building a couch that has the standard seat height, is flat and level but has a slightly slope fro the armrest to the top of it and I’m having trouble finding the normal armrest height

    Thank you

    • Hi Sarah,
Thanks for your question. Armrests are typically 7″-9″ above the seat height. I’ve added it to the above article.

  2. what is the standard distance between upper cabinets that flank the kitchen sink, like when you have no window and a high cabinet above the sink?

    • Hi Lily,
The horizontal distance between the full hanging cabinets over a sink is usually about the width of the sink or wider. For a standard 33″ wide double sink, the hanging cabinet is usually 32″.

  3. can u put an isometric layout of a kithchen? with sink refrigerator, cabinet and range?? also with its dimension.. thanks

  4. Hai, i’m deepak a student of architect, i want to standards dimensions of furniture which is use in bed room, kitchen, living room etc.

I hop you give me a detail about this.

    thank you

    • Hi Beverly,
On hanging kitchen cabinets, the depth is usually around 11 1/4″ on the inside (plates are around 10 1/2″ to 11″ in diameter), with a total outside depth of around 12″ when you add in the back (1/4″ plywood) and face frame (3/4″ solid wood).

  5. This site gave me the measurements I needed. Thanks! I have a different question re: remodeling. How difficult is it to change from electric water heater to gas, eco-friendly, heatupon need water heater system? How difficult is it to change from an electric heat pump heat and a/c to gas heat and keep the elec heat pump? Is there a cost benefit? I’ve been heating an 1144 sq ft home for 4 yrs with rollaway radiators that run on elec since the heat pump and backup elec heat unit failed, and saved money over the heating bill with the heat pump. Does gas heat save money over elec rollaway radiators? I live in Louisiana.

    • Hi Jackie,
Whether a gas or electric is less expensive to operate a water heater or heating will vary depending on the prices of utilities in your area, but generally gas is cheaper for heating hot water and your home than electricity, particularly in colder climates. Air based electric heat pumps work well if the climate isn’t too cold, but become inefficient under 35 degrees F. Geothermal heat pump are very efficient no matter where you live, but are expensive to install. You can find a calculator that allows you to compare the cost of operating gas and electric water heaters, based on the utility costs in your area, in our article Choosing a Hot Water Heater. For more on how to most efficiently heat your home, check out our article on What’s the Best Way to Heat and Cool a Home Efficiently.

  6. I have a very tall (36″) dining table. The ceiling in the dining room is 13 feet, so the table more or less looks okay, but I will have to find chairs (or have them custom made). Do you know how high the seats should be and how high above the table top would look best for the chair backs? I thought about fancy bar stools, but I haven’t yet found any that I like.

  9. hi Ben,
i got the dimensions you posted.they’re really helpful.i just wanted to ask if the measurement you have(which is in inches)would still be standard if converted to meters?or there are some differences?a million thanks.

    • Hi Von,
These measurements are for cabinets and furniture in the U.S. I’m not sure what the standards are in other countries, but since most are based on what is comfortable, I would assume they’re similar.
